Jaelycka Licuanan Martinez (pronounced "jay-LIE-ka") is a Filipino-Canadian graphic designer based in Toronto. Her creative journey began at age 12 with video editing, where she developed an early interest in storytelling through motion. This led her to explore other ways of making, eventually guiding her into the world of graphic design.

Jaelycka enjoys anything interactive, poetic, and a little strange. In her free time, she creates experimental motion work and participates in multi-editor projects. With a focus on experimentation and continuous refinement, she approaches each project as an opportunity to learn, communicate, and reflect.

Personality frameworks like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Big Five, and the Enneagram system have become tools for understanding ourselves and others, yet the way we interpret them often flattens the complexity, layers, and transformational potential that they were designed to offer. Auri (pronounced “Oh-Ree”) is an interactive design artifact meant to present personalities in flux using the Enneagram framework. The aim is to encourage users to use personality frameworks as tools to speak meaningfully about the key differences and features of their personalities, while recognizing that personality is layered and constantly changing. To discuss both the flattering and less flattering traits is to foster deeper understanding and compassion for the self and others, encouraging growth beyond fixed personality traits. This project does not assign personality types; it presents the personality framework in its entirety, turning the solo experience of one-result personality tests into collaborative conversation and finding parts of yourself within the whole.

“Unbound” is a participatory design artifact (from the early stages of my thesis) that explores the layers of personality through varying paper types and colours. Users must choose cards they relate to and form a personalized deck of their traits. The colours and paper types of each card are informed by the Enneagram personality types and subtypes. It is a visual, tangible presentation of the complexity of personality.

REFLECTIVE BOOK

“Breedbate” means “One looking for a fight or argument; a troublemaker” or “One who causes quarrels.” This semester-long project consists of four components: a 2D, 3D, 4D, and reflective piece.  The 2D piece is a book that argues with itself, an analysis of a human being, or a breedbate. The 3D piece represents how their quarrels sometimes have no logical reasoning behind them; people cause trouble just cause they can. I have received many interpretations of this piece, which only contribute to my intent of the breedbate's nonsensical nature. The 4D piece is an original card game inspired by Uno and Cards Against Humanity. It is designed for players to be a breedbate themselves and initiate chaos through given prompts. The logo is based on the expression “putting a spanner in the works.” The reflective piece is a journal with compositions representing my (messy) process.

“LISTEN” POSTER

This poster uses nonconventional design technology to encourage the viewer to truly listen - whether to themselves or to others - in a world overwhelmed by noise. While voices may begin as messy and fragmented, structure can emerge through interaction and dialogue. Instead of Adobe programs, I used Voice Memos and Video Star.

“The Edit Collection” is a poster-zine based on an edit archive I created. I chose three edits and gave each of them a spread featuring an analysis and metadata. The zine unfolds into a poster of stills and timestamps of other edits I’ve saved.

This poster features a collection of sources that discuss the relationship between elements of the music industry (music blogs, websites, the public eye, music videos) and album cover design. It emphasizes that the construction and criticism of cover design depend on factors other than the artist’s inner world, describing theoretical approaches to criticizing and analyzing album covers.

“FOCUS” TITLE SEQUENCE

This title sequence is based on a (fictional) digital virus that visually and sonically alters the user’s grip on reality. The form of the virus is parallel to its effects; it gradually gets worse. All sound, illustration, and animation were done by me.
